Who remembers SNAKE being the best game on the planet and the fact you played it on a mobile phone made it even better! Let’s get nostalgic and reminisce about the good old days of the Nokia 3310.
As soon as the opportunity came about to review a Nokia 3310 I was all over it. I can’t believe these past kings of the mobile world have been rejuvenated and are available at AO.COM.
I’ll get around to the review of the newer 2017 version in a minute, but first let’s have a think back to the first wave of Nokia’s that blew my mind.
I remember a time when if you didn’t have phone credit you couldn’t even accept a call. There was no QWERTY keyboards, you had to put in some serious effort to bang out a text message, a text message that you always signed off with your name, From, David HA! You only had a set amount of characters and you wanted to fill them up to get your 10p’s worth, there were no ‘K’ messages, what a waste of money that would have been.
It was all very new back when I was a teenager and I remember the Nokia 3310 being the first mobile phone I got that didn’t have a huge arial sticking up at the top. It was sleek, small and had Snake built in. Oh by the way kids, the smallest phone was the coolest for a good period, that’s definitely changed. The specs and features were obviously nothing to shout about compared to the technology of today, but back then it was all very new and what now seem like the smallest things were once a big deal. The fact you could play a game on a phone was so futuristic in my teenage eyes.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing and will serve the newer 2017 version Nokia 3310 well. But in terms of hardware, software and features, what’s the story…
3G – I’m not even sure 3G existed back then, sending a text message was mind-blowing, the internet on a phone wasn’t even worth thinking about, in fact in 2000 when the original 3310 was released, the internet itself was only 5 years old in the mainstream.
Screen Size 2.4 inches – Not even half the size of a more standard display in today’s world. Even a 5 inch display is classed as small nowadays. But, as I mentioned earlier the smallest phone was the coolest for quite a while.
SIM Unlocked – They come unlocked which is a very welcome feature. You can slip in any network SIM card and you’re on your way.
Camera 2MP – The camera is a 2MP with NO zoom but does have an LED flash. Let’s be honest, it’s not going to do anything for your Instagram game.
Storage – It comes with a MicroSD slot that can take up to 32GB SD card. Mind. Blown. Another feature that didn’t even enter our brains back in the day, actual storage on a phone etc meant nothing.
Battery – This is where this device really comes into its own, 6.5 hours talk-time and 27 days standby time. TWENTY SEVEN DAYS! WTF! Absolutely incredible. I took mine out the box with less than half charge and it lasted 5 days of use reviewing it, playing snake, taking photo’s and making calls. Unbelievably good!
There’s FM Radio, Snake preloaded and you can actually have apps via the Opera Store. There’s loads of games to choose from and TWITTER! Yes, I sent a tweet from a NOKIA 3310 in 2018, mental. There’s an internet browser and I was able to check Facebook as well as read my latest blog, obviously. Unfortunately there’s no WiFi available but the 3G worked OK for me on O2. In the box you also get some earphones, they’re surprisingly good, I’ve rocked out to an entire Shawn Mendes album with them.
All in all the 2017 version of the Nokia 3310 is a GIGANTIC upgrade from the original back in 2000. It’s worth buying for pure nostalgia and even to have as a back up in your glove box in case of emergencies, I mean it lasts 27 days on standby!
I was sent my device by AO.COM to review and I love it. I’ve lost a few hours playing on snake I won’t lie.
What was your first ever mobile phone?!
