If you’ve been following me on social media I’m sure you couldn’t fail to miss that I went to BlogON at the weekend.
I was amazed for a few reasons…
Firstly, people actually knew me. I mean, only a couple and that’s including Luke but still it was pretty cool. I write stuff (Occasionally) and post bits and bobs across social media (ALOT) all via my devices at home. I talk and chat to the camera on my phone mostly, yet there I was with actual humans stood in front of me speaking. I’m pretty good with meeting new people and I can chat about anything to anyone so that was all good, but when people are telling me about myself, from what they’ve seen online, yeah that’s a little strange.
Secondly, the things that stick in people’s minds about posts I’ve written and in particular, Instagram Stories I’ve filmed. Not one, not two, but three different people all mentioned me going to the shop for toilet roll… I don’t know if I’m weird for posting that or they’re weird for remember specifically that part?! It was really funny though, especially as I couldn’t even remember doing it!
Another thing that amazed me was how nice people can be. I got some unreal comments from people I’d never met and people that I already look up to and respect, in particular Nigel, DIY Daddy. I’ve been a huge fan of Nigel’s blog for some time and to now be able to call Nigel an actual friend is brilliant and the support he’s given me and this blog is nothing short of incredible. Meeting Nigel and Rebecca, Becster.com was 100% my favourite part. Both support DadvWorld and Blended Parent Network and I won’t take that for granted EVER!
Finally, people give you free shit! I mean, loads of free shit! ‘Oh, look at that magazine’. ‘Here, take it, it’s free’. ‘What?! OK then!’ Crazy. Swizzels were there celebrating their 60th birthday, you know, drumsticks, lovehearts etc… They had a cake. A massive cake. I was struggling to stay cool at that stage, then they said I could fill my pockets, hands, hat, shoes and whatever else with any sweets I wanted… I woke up this morning with a drumstick in my… Well, it wasn’t pleasant.
We were all given goody bags with even more shit in them! 3 bags of free shit! Maybe I should point out, I mean ‘shit’ as in how cool people say ‘really good shit’, not that the stuff was shit. You get me?
Oh yeah, some people said some stuff about something too. Luke was one of them. I grasped, boosting Facebook posts is good and YouTube is, well… Shit. Not like the free shit, shit… Just shit!
Being serious for a second, the talks were all very good. I attended Tim’s session about promoting and advertising your blog. Solid information from Tim as expected, he really know his… Shit 🙂 Luke’s talk for me was boring, I’d already heard it 14 times in preparation… Just kidding, 16 times! No ha, it was really good and I’m very proud of him. It’s not easy standing in front of a load of strangers and talking. I’m really happy that the feedback he got was how honest, blunt and real his views are/were. I know that specific feedback means more than saying it was generally helpful. I also went to Sian’s YouTube Editing session and found it very informative and picked up a couple of useful tips.
I’ll be honest, as always… I’ve read and watched hundreds of articles and videos all about how to blog and how to be a YouTuber etc, I know you can’t tell can you! For me attending the event was more to meet people. Networking and building relationships, which was made much easier with the relaxed, fun atmosphere that was created by the organisers, Laura and team, hats off to you!
There were some valuable points made by all the speakers and everyone else that has put across tips, tricks and all that sorta stuff. But, for me, being genuine, meeting new people and building relationships and communities will always be the No.1 best thing anyone can do when looking to succeed in the online world. For that reason alone, BlogON was a huge success for me personally and for Luke and I as a team with Blended Parent Network.
So, if you’re asking yourself, should I go to BlogON in September, or any after that even, YES is the answer.
If you haven’t been before and want to ask any questions, leave me a comment. If you were there then let me know how your day was! See you online @dadvworld
