This is my favourite quote from Gary Vaynerchuk.
OK someone probably said it even before Gary, actually I said it to myself before I heard Gary say it but he says it a lot!
A short blunt message with a powerful punch.
Now and again I have a little float around Facebook groups in various niches I’m interested or involved with and one of the things I notice far too much of, is people talking.
Let me explain…
Communication, interaction, TALKING is all key to my industry, Blogging, Vlogging and Social Media. However, this boring, useless chat about the hows the whys and the should I’s added to the why I cant’s is just unhelpful and useless talking.
Don’t get my message here mixed up, requesting advice and asking questions to learn is something I love. I get asked questions daily by many people wanting to learn, that’s all good.
But, chats about why the new Instagram algorithm is bad for everyone and Facebook changes making it too difficult for this that and the other aren’t productive.
I’m guilty of this at times too!
What I’ve learnt over the last 18 months of trying to build something for myself, is that just doing shit is THE best way to learn. I’ve seen people ask questions about every area of blogging for example and make their little notes and try to master each section of ‘what makes a blog successful’ BUT then haven’t even turned on their laptop!
You can learn the theory of anything all from a book but frankly that means shit when you’re out in the field DOING!
I’ve had a football blog, my dad blog, a couple of Facebook Pages (17!), several start-up projects, a clothing brand and loads more! Are they all successful, NOPE! Have I learnt something from every single one, YES! Which also means they didn’t meet my expectation of ‘success’ however they weren’t failures either because I learnt something new each time. Had I not just done each of them though I would have still been sat here twiddling my thumbs wondering what if.
I get asked quite regularly ‘Do you think I should XYZ?’, I’ll be honest, I’m replying ‘YES’ before I even read what the XYZ is! Because if the thought is crossing your mind on whether you should do something that you’re interested in, then you’re already telling yourself you should.
This post is as much a reminder to myself as it is advice to you reading it.
Planning and strategy is obviously important but please don’t let that take over and end your mission before it even starts.
Just Do Shit – then take it from there.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, please leave me a comment or get in touch online @dadvworld
