Saying no, especially when you’re starting out with blogging can be harder than you think. You’ve set up your blog and promoted a few posts around, received some good feedback from friends, family and other bloggers then DING!

You’re generally so happy your immediate response without thought is ‘YES PLEASE!’ And guess what, that’s OK. In the beginning I don’t see any problem with taking on a little work for not much in return. I say not much in return but actually you get more than you’d think. You gain a little knowledge into how the process works. You get some experience in reviewing products which will help you further down the line and you get your foot in the door with a PR. Who knows what that could lead to in the future.
After building up a little portfolio, experience and confidence in the world of blogging you get your 50th email…
Hi, would you like to review a £1.29 bottle of water on your blog? We have no budget but would love to send you a sample.
This is where in my opinion some people get it wrong. The email is either responded to with a straight ‘No thank you’ or is deleted. In my experience both can be mistakes.

Hi XNAMEX how are you? Thank you for reaching out with this opportunity but I’m going to pass on this occasion. Genuinely appreciate you getting in touch! If you’d like I could share this with a few other bloggers I know that might be interested?
Words to this effect anyway.
Sometimes I get no response, which is cool. Other times I’m asked not to pass on the information. However usually and in a very recent experience I was asked to pass it on and come back to the PR with the bloggers email addresses. Now some bloggers are busy people and simply don’t have the time to be playing piggy in the middle. However, my style is to pass on this info in the hope to help other bloggers that would like such opportunities, in the further hope that one time this will in turn help me too, WIN WIN.
This actually happened to me today! I responded to a PR that a particular opportunity wasn’t for me but would pass it on to a few other bloggers I knew. I did and went back to the PR with a list of emails. Upon doing so the PR then came back to me and said she’d love to sort me out with some tickets to a show for FREE! This has now turned into an amazing opportunity for me and the family and we’re really excited about it.
Would this opportunity have come about anyway, possibly. But what if I had just replied ‘NO’ or even worse, deleted the email?
For me this has taken very little effort in return for several massive rewards…
- The PR wins because she’s found some recommended bloggers to work with.
- The other bloggers win because they’re happy to get involved with the initial opportunity.
- I win because the PR knows I’m helpful.
- I win again because the bloggers now know I’m happy to help where possible.
- My family wins because we’ve now got an opportunity that is fantastic for us.
This isn’t a post to show off how I feel I’m winning, because this might only happen once every 20 times I play piggy in the middle. It’s simply a post to share my experience in not just saying no, but how to say no.
