Fellow dads will understand how important the safety features in a family car are. You want to protect your family at all costs and luckily, technology is giving us a helping hand when we’re on the road.
Here are some of the top safety tech you should look out for when you’re buying a family car:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
This makes sure there is a safe distance maintained between your vehicle and the one in front. This is through the use of camera or radars, as well as Driver Monitoring systems that warns drivers if they don’t respond within a certain time frame.
Lane Departure Warning
This system warns the driver if the car strays too close to the edge of their motorway lane without indicating. There’s either an audible warning or a feature like a vibrating steering wheel that alerts the driver. More advanced systems will even make automatic adjustments to keep you in the lane.
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
This is a major development that can help prevent vehicle collisions. There are (understandably) many distractions in a car when your kids are in the back, especially when they’re bored on a long journey, so it’s great that AEB is increasingly being fitted as standard in new vehicles.
It uses a number of different sensors and cameras to monitor the road ahead. The driver is audibly alerted about an impending collision and if they don’t take any action, the AEB system kicks in and performs an emergency stop. This can drastically reduce the effects of a collision and maybe even stop it altogether it you’re travelling at lower speeds.
Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS)
This technology is designed to stop drivers from changing lanes when there’s a vehicle overtaking that’s hidden in the blind spot. The radar detects the presence of another vehicle, including motorbikes, and give a visual or audible warning to alert the driver. Some systems can even intervene by automatically braking or steering back into the lane.
Check the Euro NCAP Rating
Finally, don’t forget to check the Euro NCAP rating. Although not technically technology, it does test the safety credentials of a new vehicle using a five-star rating system. The result is determined by a series of tests designed to represent real-life scenarios that could result in injuries or deaths, both to passengers and other road users. They look at crash test performances for adult occupants, child occupants, vulnerable road users and safety assist.
Get some extra peace of mind when you’re jumping in the car with your family. Whether it’s a short trip into town or a road trip for the summer holidays, these revolutionary new vehicle features will help you keep your family safe and happy.
