The Deep

The Deep

One of the beauties of home educating is that when Corben takes an interest in a particular topic, we’re not restricted to learning about it via only books.

Recently Corben has been fascinated by sharks. If you follow us on social media you’ll know this already and you may have even entered his giveaway for the Shark Bites game. He loves them.

It couldn’t have fallen at a better time that The Deep in Hull had their annual Home Educators Day. Result! This meant that Corben’s interest in sharks could go to the next level, rather than just reading about them or watching them on TV, we could go and see some real ones… in real life!

We packed up some food and our cameras and set off to go see some sharks.

Now, The Deep don’t only have sharks, they have all sorts of sea life, much if which I’ve never even heard of. So this wasn’t just a learning opportunity for Corben, but for us parents too.

The Deep is a huge aquarium that spans over several levels and is home to hundreds of different sea creatures. Their main tank rises up through the levels giving you different viewing angles on each floor and is breath taking. So many different species doing their thing, it really is beautiful.

We made our way through the different sections learning tonnes of things using the information boards, touch screen games and listening to the experts on hand. In one section there was a chance to stop and learn about starfish AND stroke one!

How cool are penguins by the way. I could have watched them all day!

I think I’ll have to let the photo’s really show you how amazing this place is, me chatting about it won’t do it justice.

The Deep also has a restaurant so you can stop for food before continuing your adventure around the aquarium. I found it hilarious that Fish & Chips were on the menu… At an aquarium.

So between playing on the interactive touch screens and spotting sharks, we attending a workshop that was on for the kids.

‘I Want To Be A Diver’

It was great. So many kids and all of them seemed to be learning and most importantly enjoying it. The staff were great, knowledgable, helpful and really good with the children. There was a little video for the kids to watch and the lady running the workshop was explaining things about the diver on screen. There was constant interaction with the kids too, I love that.

There were several tables in the room, all of which had different activities on them. After the video had finished the children were free to explore all the activities on each table. Spelling out words and feeding a shark the letters was something Corben found great. Another table had sea life shaped hats so you could pretend to be a jellyfish amongst other things. All the activities were designed for learning through fun and that’s a huge part of how we educate Corben.

Sticking with the diver theme of the workshop, they had a full diver’s kit that the kids could try on, brilliant!

After the workshop we explored some more, finding a soft play area for the smaller kids. Handy if you have little one’s under a metre tall I think was the restriction.

We went to the same event last year and thought it was good. This year though, good turned to great purely because Corben was a year older. Last year he kind of ran around in no particular direction taking ZERO notice of most of the amazing things around him. This year he was keen to learn and it was amazing being able to witness him soaking up knowledge all about a subject that currently interests him.

This post is kind of two birds, one stone. I wanted to share our massively positive experience of home education. Children are so much more likely to learn about things that they’re interested in and our day at The Deep proved this.

AND we also said we’d review The Deep… Ha! But seriously, if you have the chance to get yourselves over to The Deep then I 100% recommend it.

I’d love to hear your thoughts as always down in the comments or online @dadvworld 🙂
